It's backed by Article 326 of the Indian Constitution, Sections 23(4), 23(5), and 23(6) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and aligns with the Supreme Court's judgment in WP (civil) No. 177/2023. These provisions ensure that voting rights are exclusive to Indian citizens, and the Aadhaar card serves as a robust identity proof.

Some opposition parties have raised concerns about potential misuse of data and the integrity of electoral rolls. For instance, the Trinamool Congress highlighted issues of 'duplicate' EPIC numbers. In response, the ECI acknowledged that some state electoral officers might have used incorrect alphanumeric series while issuing EPIC numbers. However, they clarified that while some electors may share the same EPIC number, their demographic details, Assembly Constituency, and polling booth information differ.
