📱 Telecom regulator TRAI has recommended the launch of a service to display the caller's name on the phone screen on the telecom network. In its recommendation, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has said that the system of displaying the caller's name on the mobile phone screen should be introduced under the 'Calling Name Presentation' (CNAP) supplementary service.
But all telecom companies provide this facility only on customer's request.
📅 With the availability of this facility it will be very helpful in getting rid of frequent unwanted calls. When the CNAP feature is activated the customer will be able to see the caller's name on his phone screen. TRAI said the government should issue appropriate directives to telecom companies to provide CNAP facility in all phones sold in India after the specified date.
📞 Name, identification details given in Customer Application Form (CAF) to be filled while taking mobile phone connection can be used during CNAP service. Native smartphone tools, apps like Truecaller, Bharat Caller also provide caller name recognition, spam detection facilities. But these services rely on data collected from people who are not always trustworthy. The telecom regulator has recommended that all access service providers offer CNAP service to their telephone customers on request. TRAI released a consultation paper in this regard in November 2022. Feedback is sought from consumers, public, and companies.
🔍 Caller information is available from Truecaller
📱 Until now mobile users have been getting caller information with the help of third party app Truecaller. In this there is a risk of data leakage of mobile users. Because with Truecaller app installation it asks many permissions like saving contacts, messages, photos, other information on your mobile. In such situation you are not required to install third party app after this decision of TRAI.
