👨⚖️ Eminent jurist and senior advocate Fali S Nariman passed away on Wednesday morning. 95-year-old Nariman was suffering from heart problems.
🇮🇳 Bhishma Pitamaha of Indian Judiciary 👨⚖️ Nariman is known as Bhishma Pitamahudu of Indian Judiciary. A Padma Vibhushan recipient, Nariman argued many sensational cases in the Supreme Court and contributed to the drafting of many new laws. With his extraordinary eloquence and sharp argumentation, Nariman appeared before several Constitutional Benches. His arguments helped the Supreme Court to interpret the provisions of the Constitution and redefine the judiciary.
📜 Golak Nath Case 👨⚖️ Some of the key cases argued by Nariman as a lawyer are Golak Nath case (constitutional amendments are also subject to judicial review), TMA Pai case (right of minorities to establish institutions of their choice), SP Gupta and NJAC case (for independence of judiciary in appointment of judges). .. etc. are important.
📚 Writer too.. 👨⚖️ Former Rajya Sabha member Nariman is also a great writer. Wrote books like 'Before the Memory Fades', 'The State of the Nation', 'India's Legal System: Can It Be Saved?', 'God Save the Supreme Court'. Nariman was born on January 10, 1929 in Rangoon, then British India. He was enrolled as an advocate in the Bombay High Court in November 1950 and was appointed as a senior advocate in 1961. Nariman practiced as a lawyer for over 70 years, first in the Bombay High Court and then in the Supreme Court. Appointed as Additional Solicitor General of India in May 1972, he resigned on 26 June 1975, the day after the Emergency was declared. His son Justice Rohinton F Nariman is a former judge of the Supreme Court. 📚
