He beat Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, ending the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) eight-year rule. Economic Woes Under NPP 😓💸
Under the NPP, Ghana faced some serious money problems. The country defaulted on debt payments, which hit the middle class and pensioners hard. Young people had a tough time finding jobs, and the government's borrowing and high taxes didn't help. To make things worse, the government took a $3 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in May 2023—the second one in just three years!
By the end of 2022, Ghana's public debt was a whopping $63.3 billion, about 88.1% of the country's GDP. This meant most of the government's money went to paying off debt, leaving little for development or helping people out. The Ghanaian cedi lost more than half its value against the US dollar, making things even pricier. Inflation hit 54.1% in December 2022, and food prices shot up by 122%. Experts think poverty could rise to 31.5% of the population by 2025.

Fed up with these hardships, Ghanaians voted for change. Mahama's win by nearly 1.7 million votes and his party's takeover of more than two-thirds of parliament show just how much people wanted a new direction.
