TL;DR: A 47-year-old man from Kerala, Thomas Gabriel, was fatally shot by Jordanian security forces while attempting to cross into Israel illegally. He and his companion, Edison, were misled by promises of lucrative jobs, highlighting the dangers of illegal immigration and exploitation.

The Dream of a Better Life Turns Fatal
Thomas Gabriel Perera, a 47-year-old resident of Thumba, Kerala, embarked on a journey to Jordan with hopes of securing a high-paying job in Israel. Enticed by promises of a ₹3.5 lakh monthly salary, he and his friend Edison set out on February 5, 2025, unaware of the perilous path ahead.
The Perilous Journey
Upon reaching Jordan on tourist visas, Thomas and Edison, along with two others, attempted to cross into Israel illegally. Guided by an agent, their plan was thwarted when Jordanian security forces intercepted them at the border. Ignoring warnings to halt, the group faced gunfire, resulting in Thomas being shot in the head and dying instantly. Edison sustained injuries but survived.
Families Left in the Dark
Back in Kerala, Thomas's family was unaware of his true intentions, believing he was on a pilgrimage to Velankanni in Tamil Nadu. The shocking news of his death reached them through the Indian Embassy in Jordan, leaving them devastated and seeking answers.
The Lure of False Promises
This tragic incident underscores the exploitation faced by individuals seeking better opportunities abroad. Unscrupulous agents prey on the vulnerable, offering false assurances of employment and prosperity. The harsh reality is that many, like Thomas and Edison, risk their lives based on these deceptive promises.
