Kia Ora, Doston! 🇮🇳🇳🇿

Guess what? India and New Zealand are taking their friendship to the next level! On March 17, 2025, our very own PM Narendra Modi welcomed New Zealand's PM Christopher Luxon in New Delhi. The vibes were super positive, and both leaders were all smiles, ready to chat about making things better for both countries.

Free Trade Talks Are Back On! 💸

After more than a decade of pause, India and New Zealand are hitting the refresh button on free trade agreement (FTA) talks. This means both countries are keen to make trading smoother and better. In the 2023-24 financial year, the trade between us was about $1.7 billion. With the FTA, this number could shoot up, benefiting businesses and consumers alike.

Stronger Defense Buddies! 🛡️

Defense was a hot topic during the meet. Both nations agreed to give their defense and security ties a "strong and strategic form." This includes joint military training and working together to keep the Indo-Pacific region free, open, secure, and prosperous. PM Modi highlighted that both countries believe in development, not expansionism.

Standing Tall Against Terrorism 🚫

Terrorism is a global menace, and both leaders stressed the importance of tackling it head-on. They recalled tragic events like the Christchurch attack in 2019 and the Mumbai attacks, emphasizing that terrorism in any form is unacceptable. Both countries vowed to work together against terrorist, separatist, and extremist elements.

Sorting Out Migration Matters 🛂

Illegal migration can be a tricky issue. To address this, India and New Zealand decided to work on an agreement to tackle illegal migration and make the movement of skilled workers easier. This move aims to benefit both nations by ensuring that migration is safe and legal.

Celebrating Sports Ties 🏏

Cricket lovers, rejoice! India and New Zealand share a rich history in sports, especially cricket. Both countries have decided to celebrate 100 years of their sports relationship in 2026. They also plan to collaborate more in areas like sports coaching, exchange of players, sports science, psychology, and medicine.

MediaFx Opinion 📝

While these developments sound promising, it's essential to ensure that the benefits of such agreements reach the common people. Trade deals and defense collaborations should aim to uplift the working class, reduce inequalities, and promote peace. It's crucial that both governments focus on policies that bridge income and social gaps, ensuring that the fruits of these collaborations are enjoyed by all, not just a select few.
