TL;DR: NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and her crewmate Butch Wilmore embarked on an 8-day mission to the International Space Station (ISS) in June 2024. Due to technical glitches with their return spacecraft, their stay extended to nine months. Now, with the successful launch of SpaceX's Crew-10 mission, they're set to return to Earth soon. ​

From a Quick Trip to a Prolonged Stay 🕒🔧

In June 2024, Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore launched aboard Boeing's Starliner for what was supposed to be a short test mission to the ISS. However, upon docking, the spacecraft encountered technical issues, including thruster malfunctions and helium leaks, making it unsafe for their return journey.  This unexpected twist extended their mission from a planned 8 days to over 270 days!

Despite the unforeseen extension, Williams and Wilmore adapted seamlessly. They engaged in numerous scientific experiments, maintenance tasks, and even participated in spacewalks. Their dedication ensured the continuous operation and success of the ISS's missions during their extended stay. ​

The long-awaited relief came with the launch of SpaceX's Crew-10 mission on March 14, 2025. This mission, carrying NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, JAXA astronaut Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov, is set to dock with the ISS, facilitating the return of Williams and Wilmore. ​
