Where Are the Women? Exploring the Decline of Female Engineers and IT Professionals

MediaFx

TL;DR: Despite more women enrolling in STEM courses in India, only 29% transition to the STEM workforce. Challenges like rigid work hours, lack of childcare, workplace biases, and societal expectations hinder their professional journey. Addressing these issues is crucial for fostering gender equality and leveraging the full potential of India's talent pool.

Hey folks! 🌟 Let's chat about something super important today. You know, even though more and more women are hitting the books and acing those STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses, we're seeing a drop in the number of female engineers and IT pros in the workforce. What's up with that? 🤔

The Big Drop:

So, here's the deal. A 2023 Sattva report found that only 29% of women who graduate in STEM courses in India actually join the STEM workforce. That's like studying so hard and then not getting to show off those skills!

What's Holding Them Back?

  1. Tough Work Hours: Many workplaces have strict timings with zero flexibility. This makes it super hard for women, especially those juggling family duties.

  2. No Childcare Support: Imagine having to choose between your kid and your job because there's no daycare option. Not cool, right?

  3. Workplace Bias: A lot of women feel that their male colleagues think guys are naturally better at science and math. Plus, there are double standards in training and biased performance reviews. Talk about unfair!

  4. Double Duty: Even if a woman has help at home, managing that help is seen as her job. So, she's basically working two jobs—one at work and one at home.

The Pay Gap Problem:

On top of all this, there's the issue of pay. Women in STEM fields earn 15-30% less than men. And it's not because they're less skilled; it's often because men are more confident in negotiating salaries. A Stanford University study pointed this out.

What Can We Do?

To turn things around, workplaces need to:

  • Offer Flexibility: Flexible work hours can make a huge difference.

  • Provide Childcare: Having childcare facilities can help women focus on their careers.

  • Ensure Fair Pay: Equal work deserves equal pay.

  • Challenge Biases: Creating an environment where everyone feels valued is key.

MediaFx's Take:

At MediaFx, we believe that every individual, regardless of gender, should have equal opportunities. It's high time we address these challenges from a working-class, socialist perspective. By promoting equality and dismantling systemic barriers, we can create a more inclusive and just society.
